Px Plate is a company that provides prescribed nutrition that caters to each individual’s requirements.
We take an in-depth look at what "healthy" really means to your body, so we can provide better support
for your individual health, metabolism, and disease resistance with nutrition that matters. Our systems
and algorithms will then analyze and translate your health, lifestyle and unique nutritional requirements
into a prescribed meal for you.
What are the principles (basis) of Px Plate Meals?
Px Plate meals are designed based on the diet patterns with the most scientific evidence on its health
benefits: the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet.
What is Mediterranean Diet?
The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is associated with the prevention of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) – the
second leading cause of dead in Singapore and the first in most industrialized countries. MD is a plant-
based diet featuring olive oil as their principal component. It is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains
cereal products, legumes, tree nuts, seeds and olives. It is moderate in fish and dairy, but low in meat
One study that showed the positive effect of the MD in health was The PREDIMED Trial. The PREDIMED
Trial was a multi-center, randomized trial done between October 2003 and December 2010. It involved
7447 men and women (age 55-80) at high risk for cardiovascular disease. At the end of this study,
significant improvements were seen in classical and emerging CVD risk factors. Furthermore, the results
supported a favorable effect of both MD on blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, blood cholesterol, overall
inflammation, and atherosclerosis (atherosclerosis is a plaque made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and
other substances found in the blood, which builds up inside the arteries).
Other than being an aid to cardiovascular health, other studies showed that:
MD may reduce aging and aging related conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia;
Prevent breast and colon cancer;
Prevent type 2 diabetes;
Assist with the treatment of obesity
Improve health-related quality of life (Bonaccio M & Investigators, 2013; Garaulet M, 2010;
Estefanía Toledo, et al., 2015).
It may reduce pain in inflammatory rheumatic diseases and play a role in weight management
(Sales C, 2009).
What is DASH diet?
The DASH diet was developed and promoted by scientists supported by the National Heart, Lung, and
Blood Institute (NHLBI). In two key studies, these scientists found that blood pressure was reduced with
an eating plan that is low in saturated fat, salt, and total fat. This plan emphasizes whole grains, fruits,
vegetables, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. DASH is rich in fibre (promotes overall
gastrointestinal health), potassium, calcium (important for bone health), and magnesium (vital for many
processes in the body, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood
pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA) and low in sodium. While it’s great for pre-hypertension
and hypertension, it also has all the attributes of a diet that promotes overall health.

What are calories/kcal?
Calories is the energy provided by food, that is essential for our body to function. The meal provided to
you has the exact number of calories that you require, according to the information you provided about
your weight, height, age, type of job, physical activity and snack intake. If you are overweight, in order to
improve your health status and for disease resistance, a lower-calorie meal will be provided. If your goal
is to lose weight, for optimal outcome you should also adjust the foods from your breakfast, dinner and
What is protein?
Protein is the major functional and structural component of all the cells of the body. Moreover, the
constituent amino acids of a protein act as precursors of many coenzymes, hormones, nucleic acids, and
other molecules essential to maintain cellular integrity and function, and health and reproduction. Also,
adequate protein intake may promote maintenance of fat-free mass in weight loss diets.
Even though protein has a crucial role in our health, the amount of protein necessary by our body, is not
as high as most people assume it would be. Just like the energy requirements, protein requirements are
calculated according to your specific needs and medical condition.
For optimal health outcomes, the Px Plate meals provide both animal and vegetal protein.
What is saturated fat?
Saturated Fatty Acid is one of several types of fat present in food. Excessive intake of foods rich in this
type of fat is linked with increment of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and increase the risk of heart
disease. Health Promotion Board and Singapore Heart Foundation recommends that the energy from
saturated to be less than 10%. Px Plate aims to provide meals with saturated fat content as low as 7% of
total energy provided by its meal.
What is monounsaturated fat?
Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) is a type of fat presented in food. Consuming this type of fat is
associated with the reduction of risk of heart disease. MUFA may lower total and LDL cholesterol levels
(known as bad cholesterol), while maintaining HDL cholesterol levels (good cholesterol). MUFAs may
also help improve the function of blood vessels. In people with type 2 diabetes, MUFA seems to improve
insulin levels and improve blood sugar levels. Px Plate uses Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) as the main source of
fat. EVOO is rich in monounsaturated fats, proven to help reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.
What is fibre?
Dietary fibre is the fraction of the edible parts of plants or their extracts, that are resistant to the
digestion and absorption in the small intestine, usually with complete or partial fermentation in the
large intestine. Dietary fibre promotes several beneficial physiological effects.
Fibre helps to prevent:
Heart-disease: Fibre may aid in the prevention of heart disease by helping lower LDL (bad)
cholesterol. Also, it may help on the reduction of blood pressure and inflammation.
Diabetes: Fibre helps control blood sugar levels for people with diabetes and reduce the risk of
Digestive Problems: Adequate amounts of fibre can prevent constipation and haemorrhoids.
Weight Gain: A high-fibre meal is more filling than low-fibre meal. Digestion of foods rich in fibre
is longer and can help stay full for longer. Therefore, having a high-fibre diet will support weight
Cancer: Foods rich in fibre keep the intestine healthy and may prevent colon cancer.
Px Plate meals are rich in vegetables, wholegrains or legumes and therefore very rich in fibre. To prevent
constipation, make sure that you drink enough water with your meal and throughout the day.
What is potassium?
Potassium is an essential mineral in our diet, it:
Keeps fluids balanced in blood and tissue;
Helps in controlling blood pressure and;
Allows nerves and muscles to work together.
Reduced potassium consumption has been associated with hypertension and CVD, and appropriate
consumption levels could be protective against these conditions. Meta-analysis including 11 cohort
studies reported an inverse association between potassium intake and risk of stroke. Other studies
concluded that increased potassium intake results in decreased blood pressure in adults.
Potassium is commonly found in a variety of unrefined foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Food
processing reduces the amount of potassium in many food products, and a diet high in processed foods
and low in fresh fruits and vegetables is often lacking in potassium.
Px Plate meals are rich in potassium, but it will still not cover all the potassium that you should have in
the day. To achieve the recommended amounts daily, add in your diet extra 2-3 servings of fruits, 2
servings of vegetable and choose only whole grains as your starch. While cooking the vegetables, steam
your vegetables, in small amounts of water, so that the amount of potassium lost in the water, is
minimized. For the cooking methods, please also see http://www.pxplate.com/blog/2017/09/15/cooking-methods-we-use-to-maximize-the-nutritional-value-of-your-meal/
What is sodium?
The human body needs a very small amount of sodium to conduct nerve impulses, contract and relax
muscles, and maintain the proper balance of water and minerals. Most of sodium in our diet comes
from salt. Salt adds flavour to food and is also used as a preservative, binder, and stabilizer. Most
Singaporeans consume at least 1,5 teaspoons of salt per day – about 3600mg sodium, which contains far
more sodium than our body needs.
Sodium and potassium are closely connected. Just like a diet low in potassium may increase blood
pressure, a high-salt diet will also increase blood pressure. Several studies shown that blood pressure
can be lowered when intake of salt is reduced to the recommended standards.
The American Heart Association and the Institute of Medicine recommends the intake of no more than
2300mg/day of sodium. Px Plate follows these guidelines, and if necessary, according to your current
health status we might need to reduce it even further. If you normally eat outside, or use plenty of salt
in your food, it is normal that you might find the meals less salty. We promise that the meals will taste
great, even with the little amount of salt added. Try to reduce the salt intake from your other meals, and
soon you will not miss salt anymore.
Why is the serving size of the animal protein kept small?
Px Plate promotes a plant-based diet which has several benefits such as lowering blood pressure, weight management, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and it is eco-friendly.
When designing a meal, the protein content will be 50% animal protein and 50% vegetarian protein.
Your meal provides the precise amount of protein according to your nutritional requirements. Px Plate
promotes a plant-based diet which has several benefits such as lowering blood pressure, weight
management, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and it is eco-friendly.
Why does the nutritional report not provide any percentage for carbohydrates and fat?
There is no strong evidence about the ideal percentage of carbohydrates or fat in a diet. For Px Plate,
the most important factor is to provide the correct amount of calories, maintain a balance between the
macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat), and to use the right ingredients in the meals.
Why does Px Plate uses brown basmati rice instead of white?
We choose brown basmati rice for its low glycaemic index (GI) and because is a wholegrain.
Brown rice is a whole grain rice that keeps the bran layer and germ. The bran and the germ contain important
antioxidants, B vitamins, minerals and fibre. Consuming a diet rich in wholegrains, such as brown rice, is
beneficial to health as it may lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancer. It can also help
in weight management. Basmati rice is known to have a lower GI than regular brown rice, therefore our choice for brown basmati rice instead of regular brown rice
Are your meals low in Glycaemic Index?
Most of the ingredients used in our meals are known to be low in Glycaemic Index
What is the Glycaemic Index (GI)?
Foods with carbohydrates can be classified according to their capability to raise blood sugar levels. The
value assigned to the food is called Glycaemic Index (GI). Some foods with high GI are digested very fast
and are rapidly absorbed thus resulting in a peak of the blood sugar levels soon after eating. Examples
of these foods are white rice, white bread, cornflakes and table sugar. The excessive intake of foods with
high GI are associated with obesity and diabetes. Px Plate includes in its meals low GI foods such
as brown basmati rice, chickpeas, oats, sweet potato, carrots, peas, tomatoes, yogurt, etc.
What are the benefits of foods with low GI?
When eating foods with low GI, its carbohydrates are slowly digested, and cause a gradual rise in blood
glucose level. Examples of foods with low GI are brown basmati rice, whole meal pasta, oatmeal, beans,
peas and lentils. Most fruits and vegetables also have a low GI. Diets with low glycaemic index value
improve the prevention of coronary heart disease in diabetic and healthy subjects. In obese or
overweight individuals, low GI meals increase satiety and facilitate the control of food
intake. Selecting low GI foods has also demonstrated benefits for healthy persons in the
overall metabolism of glucose and fats.
Are your boxes and cutlery environmental friendly?
Yes, they are. We choose our food containers and cutlery after an extensive research on which materials would be suitable for our meals and also not harmful for the environment.
The cutlery we use is a starch-based biodegradable plastic. Made from up to 80% plant- based material such as corn and 20% fossil fuel additives such as polypropylene plastic. It is biodegradable, compostable and non-toxic waste produced.
The lunchboxes are made from board material sourced from responsible forestry. Our supplier for the lunchboxes has audited its raw material supplier, for evidence of sustainable and ethical practices. It also means the raw material is renewed at an equal rate to its consumption. Plantation forests are a good example of a sustainable paper source.
